The Academy Elects A New Governing Board

Hargeisa, Somaliland, 02 January, 2010 In its fourth General Assembly, the Academy for Peace and Development elected a new governing board of directors at Ambassador Hotel on 29, December, 2010.


Following a recommendation by the preparatory committee of the GA, delegates of more than forty people rectified a list of BoD comprising 9 individuals who are well-respected among Somaliland community. Each one of the recommended members got a unanimous vote from the delegates in attendance.

Before the endorsement of the new council, the Academy's senior management briefed the delegates about the institution's programmatic and financial performance during the last two years.

Mr. Hassan Omar Hallas, the Academy's Admin/Finance director informed the delegates about the outcomes of an auditing carried out by KMPG, an international auditing firm, as result of which Interpeace, the Academy's principle partner, received an international award for financial management excellence.

During the meeting, the management of the Academy asked to amend a number of articles in the Academy's constitution including holding the GA once in every three years as opposed to two years. Subsequently, the GA suggested that this task be designated under the mandate of the new incoming council.

Dr. Aadan Abokor, one of the new board members elected, who spoke at the end of the meeting, described the task of the governing board as 'civic duty' and not a formality as many local institutions treat it.

At the conclusion, the Academy's executive director closed the GA and promised that as the Academy's staff, they will collaborate with the new board.

The General Assembly (GA) is a two year event and it is the highest organ of the Academy for Peace and Development.
